OUR ANIMALS

The luscious, sweet pastures of Charlton Musgrove grow the majority of the balanced feed, producing quality animals. Using the expertise of small local slaughter houses dramatically reduces stress and enhances carcass quality. Then the beef, veal and lamb carcasses are improved by the all important hanging process which adds to the flavour, texture and tenderness.

 

BEEF

The homebred cattle, the majority of which are Aberdeen Angus and Devon Rubies, live in the fields from late spring through to autumn and are housed at the farmstead during the winter.

Veal Calfs

VEAL.

The veal calves, the majority of which are our own dairy bull calves, are housed together in barns with loose straw beds. There are no crates, no light or movement restrictions. They are fed milk and concentrates with barley straw in mangers The meat is pink, succulent and tender. With no welfare issues to worry about it is a delicious easy-cooking option.

 

Gloucester Old Spots

PORK

Using traditional English breeds of pigs, in particular the Gloucester Old Spot, the pork is sweet with just the right amount of fat to assist flavour and cooking. The pigs are fed on the best proprietary food, barley meal and a spot of milk!

 

Lamb

LAMB

Our lamb is produced in partnership with daughter, Hannah, and son-in-law Nigel, in nearby Melbury Abbas. We include in our range both lamb hogget and mutton.

By allowing our chickens to grow their flavour and texture is greatly improved.

 

Ducklings

DUCKLINGS

We raise ducklings for the table from day old, living in roomy barns with strawed areas for resting, using a specialist pure food and copious amounts of water. Also available from the farm shop are free-range ducklings sourced from a local farmer.

DUCKS EGGS

Ducks eggs which are recognised for their rich flavour and excellent cooking quality are laid by our Khaki Campell and Silver Appleyard Ducks.

(Bronze Norfolk Black and traditional white free-range and barn reared turkeys)

Grown on the farm from day old, traditionally reared and. hung for a superb flavour. Although we specialise in the Christmas market we are now able to offer whole birds, portions and turkey escallops throughout the year.

Cow

Dairy Cows

Pedigree British Holsteins, British Friesians, Dairy Shorthorns and Brown Swiss make up our mixed herd. The farm produces 1.5 million litres of top quality milk annually from our rich grassland of the Blackmore Vale plus our home produced forage. Cheese production in Somerset is renowned the world over. The majority of our milk is sold to Wyke Farms Ltd who make farmhouse cheese and butter available in our shop.

Unpasturised milk from the farm with all its recognised qualities is only available at the farm shop and farmers markets.
